Bird Springs, Ariz. native creates new Western fair logo

(Courtesy photo) Designed to instantly identify the Western Navajo Fair, Leevin Yellow’s winning logo is synonymous with what the fair is about: the midway, the rodeo, yé’ii bi cheii, and royalties. Yellow’s logo will be used this year for the 47th annual Western Navajo Fair and in the future.

The Tónaneesdizí Local Government announced last week the winner of the Western Navajo Fair logo contest, in which the winner, a young graphic artist from Bird Springs, Ariz., had no problem impressing the judges.

Mike Sixkiller, the community event coordinator and fair manager at the Local Government, made known on Aug. 17 that Leevin Yellow, 29, had won the nearly two-month-long contest.

“The logo contest was just a unique way to get the community involved with the Western Navajo Fair,” Sixkiller said.

“So we (at the Local Government) thought the best way to include (people) into the fair is by getting someone local to develop a logo.”

Sixkiller said Yellow’s winning logo features a cultural relevance along with silhouettes of every thing that embodies the fair, such as the midway, the rodeo, yé’ii bi cheii, and royalties.
