When brothers Nayo and KeHugh Swan first learned that their local community center faced closure due to lack of funding, they wanted to help raise funds to keep it open.

For the past three years they’ve been hosting benefit dances in the Thoreau Community so far have raised $1,000 in the last three years.

Nayo Swan, 11, and KeHugh Swan, 10, as powwow dancers they wanted to use their skills to give back to their community, and they have by raising over $1,000 for the Thoreau Community Center (TCC) in the past three years.

Nayo is a grass dancer and KeHugh is a fancy dancer.

“It’s fun dancing, but it’s not just about the money and the attention. You have to pray while you do it too,” KeHugh said, adding that you can’t be greedy, stingy or go around bragging about what you’re doing.”

Their most recent benefit dance was on Feb. 13 during half time at a basketball game at Thoreau High School where the brothers raised a little over $400.

All the proceeds will be donated to the Thoreau Community Center, said the boy’s mother Kerenthia Swan.
