Figurative, literal warmth combine at Fort

FORT DEFIANCE

Navajo Times | Donovan Quintero
Leah Hoisington from Fort Defiance looks through the different styles of donated jackets Saturday at the “Give Beck” Coat and Blanket Drive event in Fort Defiance.

The Fort Defiance Chapter House on Saturday was filled with hundreds of donated coats, live music and Diné residents looking to stay warm this winter.

The “Give Beck” Coat and Blanket Drive filled tables with coats of all sizes for children and adults on one end; on the other, a public address system and lights was set up for local musicians performing for everyone in attendance.

“It’s good to help out, especially in the community, “said Jerold Cecil, owner of House of Bourbon Entertainment.

Cecil, along with members of Native American Music Fund Free Music Workshop and Give Beck organized the event, which drew in donations of coats from the local public and as far away as Orange County and Los Angeles, California.

Give Beck was started by James Beck of Irvine, California, who first travelled to the Navajo Nation in 2012 as part of his “Pay-It-Forward” SerfBliss campaign, for which he travelled across America to serve one family in need in every state.

While in Arizona he stayed with a Navajo family, and fell in love with the Navajo culture and people.

“The Navajo took me in and treated me as family,” said Beck, who has visited the Navajo Nation six times since 2012.
