WR students race for fun, food

FORT DEFIANCE

Window Rock High School junior Albe Bedonie won himself a Christmas ham when he came in first during the Window Rock High School’s student body council sponsored ham trot event Friday morning.

Although the weather blew in cold rain, there were still at least a dozen students who braved the bitter cold to race around their school for a chance to win ham, pies, water, and other prizes.

“It was a hard run, wearing all these layers,” said Bedonie, out of breath after he came in first. “I didn’t know what was happening, I just came out to see. But when I found out we were running I thought I’d go for it, because I was the fastest one here.”

In celebration of the beginning of the students’ two-week Christmas break the student council decided to hold a week full of events for the students. Senior Tonya Bluehorse, student body president, said they were inspired to hold the event after they helped with Tsehootsoi Primary Learning Center’s turkey trot.

“It was kind of like a spirit week, but it was kind of hard because finals was this week,” said Bluehorse.

Sponsor for the student council Melissa Martinez said that the ham trot was intended for students and community members, but it was so cold and wet that it was decided that it would just be students who’d race around the high school.

Martinez said high school students “are still big kids at heart,” so holding such a festive event, especially to mark the start of Christmas break, gave the students a chance to participate and enjoy being rambunctious for an hour before they had to return to class and take final exams.
