Navajo couple Brandon Yazzie and Pamela Smith of Tse Yah Toh, New Mexico, celebrate after wining 1st place for “Most Original” costume during the costume contest at the 8th annual ZooBoo event at the Navajo Nation Zoo in Window Rock.

The 8th Annual Zoo Boo event at the Navajo Nation Zoo was filled with people of all ages dressed in costumes and face paint to celebrate Halloween in zoo fashion from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. with clear skies and a light breeze.

The Navajo Nation Zoo was filled with many Halloween festivities such as a costume contest, temporary tattoos, family portraits, arts and crafts, and most of all, fun.

“We appreciate you guys coming out this year and making this fun,” said Zoologist David Mikesic, who added last year’s ZooBoo was overshadowed by rain.

With over 500 in attendance, the annual ZooBoo was filled with various costumes: Star Wars figures, Disney characters, the Navajo Ghostbusters, Batman and creative, innovative costumes that brought smiles to some attendees.

The Halloween contest was the main attraction as everyone with a costume was allowed and encouraged to participate.

Divided up into categories: scariest, funniest, most creative, and free for all, the contest appealed to everyone. Zookeepers and staff were the judges in the costume contest.

The whole contest proved to be fun, with people shouting out who they thought should win, and cheering on people with the most innovative costumes.
