DILKON, Ariz.

The graduating eighth grade class of 20 students from Dilcon Community School recently took an end-of-the year educational field trip to the nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C., for three days. The Dilcon School Board of Directors approved the educational trip with conditions at the February regular board meeting, according to a DCS news release.

The schedule had the students touring many notable places such as the Senate building, Library of Congress, and national monuments.

“For most of the students, it was the first time they had ever flown on a plane and for some it was the first time they had gone out of Arizona,” said school principal/CEO Bill Wachunas. “They visited a lot of places. It was very eye-opening and educational.”

Wachunas said the students were excited and sort of scared when they boarded the plane for the first leg of the flight to Chicago from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix.

“As the wheels lifted off the ground students raised their arms up and shouted with joy, and a little bit of fear,” said Wachunas. “The students rotated seats throughout the flight so all students got a chance to sit by the window and watch the country pass by below. This system of seat sharing would take place on every leg of our flight.

“As we landed in Chicago (the first leg of our flight) with the touchdown of wheels, students shrieked and groaned in shock at the slight bouncing of plane in the landing. Then when the plane came to a complete stop in Chicago the entire class started applauding. The other passengers were surprised. The flight crew even made a special announcement about Dilcon School, where we were from, where they were going, and told everyone that most had never flown before. The other passengers then gave our students a loud roar of applause.”
