For some students, it’s a relief to spell 10 words right, but for fourth grader Mikaele Curley he was shocked he spelled 1,000 sight words with zero mistakes.

“It was awesome for me because I’ve never done that,” Curley said.

He did do it.

According to spelling bee Sponsor Lisa Magee, Curley was the first student at Paradise Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nev. to successfully spell 1,000 sight words without any mistakes. Sight words often are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight.

“Congratulations to the Curley Family. Your smart son completed 1,000 sight words with zero mistakes. He is the first student in the entire school to do this. Wow!” Magee wrote in a note she sent home with Curley.

Curley, 10, said he studies sight words at home and in school, he’ll say and spell anywhere from 50 to 100 words every day.
