A Navajo grad from New York University wants to use his master’s degree to help Native students achieve a higher education.

Byron Tsabetsaye, 29, graduated from New York University with his Master of Arts degree in higher education and student affairs on May 20 at Yankee Stadium.

Tsabetsaye is originally from Crystal, N.M., but he resides in New York City. He is Ashiihi, born for Tachii’nii.

Tsabetsaye said his overall goal is just to make a difference in the way that Native American students perceive college by helping them realize that they have opportunities to go to college.

The reason why he wants to do that is because Tsabetsaye spent his K-12 education on the Navajo Nation with the Window Rock Unified School District.

He understands that many Native students don’t go to college, and some unfortunately don’t make it out of high school, but he wants to change that perspective.

“Seeing that as a problem and something I experienced as a young Native American, I wanted to enter a profession that would help me address those issues,” Tsabetsaye said, adding that his doubts about going to college weren’t academic, but more along the lines that his parents couldn’t afford it.
