Members of the board of regents for Diné College are still trying to tackle the problem of the college's president, Ferlin Clark.

On one hand Clark has received support from members of the student body who have praised his willingness to speak to them at any time and address their concerns.

On the other hand, Clark has come under severe criticism from former employees who claim that Clark rules the college with an iron fist and has created an atmosphere of mistrust.

Andrew Tah the board's president, said Wednesday that the board agreed in December to offer Clark a two-year extension to his present contract. Clark hasn't accepted the contract yet, Tah said, but has 90 days to do so.

The reason why Clark hasn't signed off on the offer, according to officials within his office, is that the board said there would be conditions imposed and so far has not made known what those conditions are.

Tah said concerns have been brought to the board about conditions on the campus. Some of these concerns have also been in the news media, he said.

"We want everyone to enjoy the experience of working at the college," he said, adding that the board is looking at various options on how to address the concerns.

Over the past couple of months, other board members have also expressed concerns about how they could deal with the criticism of Clark while keeping him on because of his work in bringing financial stability to the college.

"We would like to say that the criticism was not justified but apparently there are problems that we need to addressed," said one board member, who asked that his name not be used, before the board's December meeting.

Everyone is waiting to see how the board addresses these concerns. The regents met on Saturday to discuss a memorandum of understanding to present to Clark which would apparently have laid out the conditions but the meeting had to be adjourned when the student body representative, Georgeett Cook, decided to walk out of the meeting, leaving it without a quorum.

The board tried to meet again on Tuesday at the Education Center in Window Rock but did not due to the weather. The board is now planning to meet on Monday and this has caused another controversy.

On the agenda are two items.

The first is authorizing the board president to sign a memorandum with the college president.

The second is the appointment of an acting college president.

There has been no explanation by the board on why an acting president is needed and college officials said they found this confusing because on one hand, they want Clark to sign a two-year extension and on the other hand they're talking about appointing an acting president.

One theory floating around the Tsaile, Ariz., campus is that the board wants to be prepared with someone in the wings in case Clark refuses to go along with the conditions.

It was this talk of getting an acting president that caused several students on Tuesday to travel to Window Rock, where the board was planning to meet. They wanted to speak to the board on behalf of Clark and when the meeting was cancelled, they meet with officials of the president's office and the Navajo Times.

. It is infinitely more difficult to lead your people when half of them are against you. The Dine is notorious for doing just that. When we stop fighting each other and use our power of numbers for good and not selfishly, then, we may finally move forward as a people. Walk in harmony Mr. Clark and my Dine and I hope the good prevails in all this mayhem so we may all go about our lives.

. The people whom were released from their position, perhaps, ought to take a deep look inside, take it as a lesson and move on to other endeavors. I hope they realize what they are doing is not hurting Mr. Clark more than it is hurting the students and the faculty there today. The first rule of leadership is, when something goes wrong, the leaders are the first to be blamed. It is how the leaders conduct themselves, keep integrity and by which they fix the problem they were blamed for.

Perhaps they didn't reach the standard that was presented to them. Not for anyone's happiness but to offer the students the best that the Dine students deserve. Isn't that what we all want for each other and ourselves? The students are in full support of Mr. Clark and isn't the students the reason Dine college is there in the first place? Therefore their voice should be heard and accounted for the most.

The majority of these comments are focused on religion, not on faith, our faith, and that yes some of the Dine are now Christians. IF they (Dine Christians) are pushed away then we are pushing our own people away. Is that what we really want? Is it not obvious that all the complaints about Mr. Clark's actions are all FORMER employees?

I am sitting here in another country, defending my country and my people. You are all Dine, therefore, still my people, right? I am reading what my fellow Dine had to say about this particular issue. I am astounded with disbelief at what I am reading. #80 tells Mr. Clark to read a book? Does this Dine graduate know that MR. Clark perhaps has read more than several books?

Still believe in DC
Fran: a lot of us r educated in both ways-of-life so we r PROUD & rich NOT poor. As u know, there r many DC profsm that r not doing quality teaching, u know who I am referring to - get on their case(s) and make them to do what they r paid to do instead of blaming the students! R u frustrated because it starts at home? Well, b proactive by encouragement conversations during pillow talks & have him work with the students to do better in math, Eng, & all the other courses. That's what ALL good profs r suppose to do. Good luck u probably need it!

Beliefs...blah!
It’s funny since the introduction of categorization, individuals have interpreted how they felt was the correct manner in which they would operate on a daily bases. Through the board school era and embodied mentality of inferiority caused by Christianity and many other non-Navajo beliefs. The Navajo people have weakened and NOW it is time to make change, to incorporate true Cultural Integrity, not some made-up fascade. Good Work President Clark…do watcha got to do…we gots dis!

What have you people done with Dine College?
I was raised around NCC/Dine College. Life on campus was simple, yet I do remember the college Prez had issues back in the 70's and 80's. Where have the good old days gone. Christian Religion should never be involved with education. Especially the Piote stuff. True Navajo medicine man blessings however, should be used without money involved. Why is it that when money is involved the college Prez is in trouble? All employees should to be educated to able to work on a college campus.
