Pedestrian killed on U.S. 491

A Tohatchi, N.M., man died Friday when he was struck by a car while walking on U.S. 491 in Tohlakai, N.M. The victim was identified as Leo Tom Jones, 40.
According to police, he was struck at about 10:55 p.m. by a car driven by Leroy James of Tohatchi. Death was due to severe head trauma.
James told police that he did not see Jones on the road until it was too late. He said he tried unsuccessfully to avoid hitting him, and immediately pulled off the road and called police.
Officers at the scene said James and his family appeared stunned by the accident. Police issued no citations.
Shiprock man severely injured in stabbing
Workers at the Northern Navajo Medical Center called police July 31 to report that the victim of a vicious stabbing had been dropped off at the hospital.
The victim was identified as Harry J. Cly, 22, of Shiprock.
Jophira Merritt, no address or age listed, told police she was driving and saw Cly staggering on the road. She stopped and found that he had been stabbed and took him to the hospital.
Police went to the area where she said she saw Cly but could find no evidence. Cly, who received three stab wounds to the left side of his chest area, was flown to Phoenix for treatment.
Police said they have no suspects so far.
Axe hunt ends in trailer fire
Police were called to the Gonzales Trading Post in Smith Lake, N.M., just before midnight July 23 by a woman who said she'd been chased by a man armed with an axe.
When they got there, they met Stacy Vandever, 25, of Thoreau, N.M., who told them that Elden Alex Kee, 29, of Twin Lakes, N.M., had an axe and had chased her.
When police went looking for Kee, they instead found a trailer on fire at the junction of Route 371 and Route 9. Police called in the fire but by the time firefighters arrived the trailer, which belonged to Gwendolyn Booker, had burned to the ground.
Tohlakai woman injured
A Tohlakai, N.M., woman was injured July 17, reportedly by a man wielding a bat, police said.
Police officers patrolling U.S. 491 said they were stopped at 11:44 p.m. by motorist Ray Shark, who reported a woman yelling and bleeding from the face.
Police found the woman, identified as Elaine Jones, 30, of Tohlakai, and she was bleeding from the head and mouth.
The officers could not find out anything from her about what happened but a witness, identified as Eddie Yazzie of Tohatchi, N.M., said that Ervin Yazzie, no age given, of Tohatchi, had hit her with a bat.
Eddie Yazzie said the suspect had also hit him on the right shoulder with the bat. Jones was sent to the Gallup Indian Medical Center for treatment.
