Traffic program helping Utes
The seven-member Selective Traffic Enforcement Program will help out the Ute Mountain Utes this weekend by setting up patrols and roadblocks along U.S. Highway 491 north of Shiprock.
Ute Mountain is holding its 121st Annual Bear Dance & Powwow this weekend in Towaoc, Colo.
In Ute tradition, the event celebrates the bear awakening from its winter hibernation to lead the people to the first ripe berries. Besides the powwow, it includes traditional stick games and a rodeo.
Ute Mountain officials asked for assistance from the Navajo police in an attempt to reduce the amount of liquor and drugs brought to the celebration.
About 10,000 people, many of them Navajo, are expected to attend the event, which takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31.
