Body found in Flagstaff ID'd as Cameron man

The Flagstaff Police Department has identified a man whose body was found July 24 lying in a culvert south of the Flagstaff Mall, according to a news release from the department.

Police were called to the scene in the area of 4600 north Highway 89. Upon arrival, officers determined the subject was deceased. The subject had no identification and officers were unable to determine his identity.

On July 26, the Flagstaff Police Department was able to identify the subject as Ervin Yazzie, 45, from Cameron Ariz. Next of kin was notified.

The cause and manner of death is still being investigated.

Man who fell at Horseshoe Bend ID'd

PAGE, Ariz. - On Saturday, July 24, National Park Service Rangers responding to a report of a man falling from a cliff at the Horseshoe Bend Overlook located the body of a 20-year-old male at the base of the cliff near the Colorado River, according to an NPS news release.

The victim was identified as a Greek national who was traveling with a tour group.

Park rangers and a Classic Lifeguard helicopter responded to the scene and determined that the man fell approximately 600 feet and was deceased.

With assistance from the National Park Service helicopter from Grand Canyon National Park, park rangers and Coconino County deputies recovered the body from the base of the cliff and transported it to the overlook parking lot where it was transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Interagency Dispatch received the report of at approximately 11:25 a.m. on July 24.  The Horseshoe Bend Overlook was closed to visitors during the recovery operation.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation of the incident in coordination with the National Park Service.



McNarry man sentenced to 4 years

PHOENIX - Vernon Gatewood, 34, of McNarry, Ariz., was sentenced July 26 to four years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. This offense occurred on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Whiteriver, Ariz. Gatewood pleaded guilty to this offense on May 7, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

On March 2, 2009, tribal police were called regarding an aggravated assault, wherein shots were allegedly fired at an individual. At that time, Gatewood was found to be in possession of a loaded .38 special revolver with one spent cartridge. Gatewood, having previously been convicted of a felony in the district court of Arizona, was thereby legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Dennehotso man sentenced for domestic assault

PHOENIX - Georgeson J. Warren, 25, of Dennehotso, Ariz., was sentenced this week to six years in federal prison followed by placement in an alcohol rehabilitation and anger management program while on three years supervised release, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Warren pleaded guilty on March 10 to a domestic assault, which occurred on the Navajo Nation.

The facts showed that Warren committed a domestic assault, seriously fracturing the arm of a domestic partner, which required extensive surgery to repair.

The court noted that Warren had a history of domestic assault and ordered that the Bureau of Prisons conduct a psychiatric examination of Warren while he is in prison to aid in the development of a treatment plan to address these issues.
