One of the legacies of the Jim Crow South was the right of businesses and private individuals to discriminate against the Black population based on their race.

Many gay and lesbians feel Arizona will enter a new Jim Crow era if Gov. Jan Brewer signs into law Arizona Senate Bill 1062, allowing businesses to refuse to serve gay customers based on "sincerely held" religious beliefs.

Hundreds of mainly young protestors gathered outside of the state capital Monday evening and chanted, "Veto, veto, veto!" in front of both local and national media that has taken an interest in what has become the most controversial action of the Arizona state legislature since the passage of AZ SB 1070 in 2010, a law that allowed police to stop and question anyone they suspected was an illegal immigrant.
