Candidates from the Navajo Reservation and surrounding communities filed their papers Tuesday in Gallup, Farmington and Santa Fe for various county and state positions for New Mexico's June 3 primary.

In McKinley County, the big race is probably for county sheriff with Felix Begay, the current sheriff, battling it out again against Frank Gonzales, a former sheriff. The two have faced off against each other three times with Gonzales winning twice and Begay winning once.

The two are running for the Democratic nomination along with five others - Ronald Silversmith, Jack D. Graham, Bobby Sandoval, Walter Ed Marble and Albert Benally. All are from Gallup except for Benally who is with the Ramah Navajo Police Department, Marble who is from Smith Lake and Graham who is from Navajo Estates.
