WASHINGTON

All members of President Barack Obama’s cabinet will visit Indian Country in the next two years to visit with youth and learn about their lives.

That was one of the promises Obama shared with tribal leaders Wednesday during his sixth annual White House Tribal Nations Conference. The conference came six months after the president and first lady visited the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota, but Obama was still shaken by what he saw and heard.

“It was a day I’ll never forget,” he told an audience of hundreds of tribal leaders, members of Congress and representatives from community and advocacy groups.

During his visit to Standing Rock, Obama met privately with a group of young people who were invited to say whatever was on their minds. He reminisced about that visit Wednesday as he addressed his comments to tribal leaders and a select group of youth ambassadors representing 36 tribal nations or communities across the country.
