After a 2-3 start, the Page Sand Devils are looking more like a playoff team.
The Sand Devils have posted two consecutive wins in sectional play, which includes last Friday’s 54-2 road victory over the Ganado Hornets.
With that, Page has moved up to No. 15 in the latest Arizona Division IV polls powered by Maxpreps.
“We knew that we had to win coming in here,” Page coach Jeff Wheatley said. “We had some guys banged up and some of the other guys stepped up and they did well. It keeps us alive and it keeps us in the hunt. It’s a good win for us in our section.” After going through a brutal nonconference schedule, the Sand Devils earned a 54-38 win over Monument Valley on Oct. 3 to get their momentum going.
“You know, we started our season with some tough games with Payson and Northwest Christian, but we knew that the second half of the season is the most important part of our schedule,” Page senior running back Jason Moore said. “This is the time when we need to play our best.” And with only 16 bids available for this year’s state playoffs, the margin for error becomes a lot less for teams on the bubble with each passing week.
With three games left in the regular season the Sand Devils will finish out the year with back-to-back home games starting with Chinle on Friday before they host Window Rock on Oct. 24 for homecoming.
Page will then travel to Winslow on Oct. 31 in a game that could determine the sectional champion. Of course, that’s assuming both teams win their next few games as the Bulldogs improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league play with its 61-20 win over Monument Valley last Friday.
“We are hoping that it’s going to come down to that in the end,” Wheatley said of the plausible scenario. “It’s been our goal from the beginning. We have to work hard and win on Friday and get another one after that. Hopefully it comes down to Winslow and us.”
