Jonathan Lee Deschene

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral services for Jonathan Lee Deschene, 29, of Fort Defiance, will be held Friday, Nov. 14, at 9 a.m. at the Fort Defiance Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Fort Defiance.

Jonathan was born Oct. 6, 1985, in Tuba City, into the Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan), born for TTódich’ii’nii (Bitter Water Clan). He died Nov. 9, 2014, in Fort Defiance.

Jonathan graduated in 2005 from Window Rock High School and was employed with a private catering service. He enjoyed hiking, fishing and loved animals.

Jonathan is survived by his mother, Carol Brown; brothers, Brian Deschene, Randy Deschene and Carlos Deschene; and sisters, Carolyn Brown and Kailyn Brown.

Jonathan is preceded in death by his father, Cody Deschene; and brother, Gilbert Deschene.

Pallbearers will be Brian Deschene, Randy Deschene, Carlos Deschene, Jaymie Sheppard, Shayney Begay, Ryan Yazzie, Craig Nelson, and Wacey Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert Brown, Robert Begay and Calvin Maloney.

A reception will take place at Fort Defiance Chapter House following services.

Esther Chiquito Toledo

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. — Funeral services for Esther Chiquito Toledo, 65, of Counselor, N.M., will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. at the BIC Navajo Mission Church in Bloomfield, N.M. Burial will follow in Bloomfield.

Esther was born into the Hashk’aa hadzohi (Yucca Fruit-Strung-out-in-a-Line Clan), born for çshiihi (Salt People Clan). She died Nov. 9, 2014, in Albuquerque.

Esther was a homemaker. She enjoyed listening to music, watching cowboy movies, joking around and spending time with her family.

Esther is survived by her children, Maxine C. Toledo and husband Valentino Leyba, Billson C. Toledo, Billy C. Toledo Jr., and Susie Toledo and husband Moses; brothers, Leo H. Chiquito and Glen Chiquito; sisters, Ray Werito, Lucy Toledo, Rosita Trujillo, and Mary Tso; and six grandchildren.

Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Billy C. Toledo; mother, Alice Herrera; and father, Juan Chiquito.

A reception will take place at the BIC Navajo Mission following services.

Lawrence King

GALLUP — Funeral services for Lawrence King, 39, will be held today, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial.

Lawrence was born Aug. 31, 1975, in Gallup, into the Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan), born for Tábaahá (Water’s Edge Clan). He died Nov. 8, 2014, in Gallup.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Michelle King; and sons, Michael King and Alexander King.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Yazzie, Mark Betsoi, Jason King, Hendrick King, Bernie Etsitty and Spencer Yazzie.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Tom Sala

OJO ENCINO, N.M. — Funeral services for Tom Sala, 61, of Ojo Encino, N.M., were held Nov. 7 at the Cedar Hill Church in Ojo Encino, with Tulley Butler officiating. Interment followed in Counselor, N.M.

Tom was born into the Nihoobáanii (Gray Streaked-Ends Clan), born for Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan). He died Oct. 31, 2014, in Albuquerque.

Tom was employed with home care and the railroad. He enjoyed fixing cars, cooking, watching wrestling and breaking horses.

Tom is survived by his wife, Emma H. Castillo; brother, Junior Sala; sister, Tillie Martine; and 14 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sean Sala, Dwight Sala, Dewayne Sala, Dempsey Sala, Dickson Sala Jr., and Darryl Sala.

Honorary pallbearers were Dion Martinez and Dan Gloniiziinii Jr.

Jennie Long Nez

TSE BONITO, N.M. — Funeral services for Jennie Long Nez, 91, of Fort Defiance, were held Nov. 6 at the Tse Bonito Church in Tse Bonito, N.M. Interment followed at the Fort Defiance cemetery.

Jennie was born Sept. 20, 1923, into the Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan), born for Naakai dine’é (Mexican Clan). She died Nov. 1, 2014, in Fort Defiance.

Jennie was a foster grandparent with Fort Defiance Chapter and Window Rock schools. She was well known for making the best Navajo cakes. She enjoyed playing bingo and making quilts.

Jennie is survived by her sons, Alvin Nez and Oswood Nez; daughters, Elta Nez, Virginia Silversmith, Lorraine Nez, Stella Slinkey and Lorraine Upshaw; sister, Nellie Long Begay of Rabbit Brush, N.M.; and 64 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jennie is preceded in death by her parents, Bah and Tom Long; brothers, Hoswood Upshaw, Earl Upshaw, Noswood Upshaw and Hoskie Upshaw; sister, Stella Nez; and sons, Arthur Begay, Ivan Alexander, Leonard Nez Jr., and Albert Nez.

Pallbearers were Dwayne Begay, Kyle Henry, Cody Nez, Oswood Nez, Alvin Nez Jr., and Earl Upshaw.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Cook, Al Garretson Nez and Benjamin Thompson.

Wilford Begay

GALLUP — Funeral services for Wilford Begay, 53, were held Nov. 4 at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Interment followed at the Gallup City Cemetery.

Wilford was born Feb. 27, 1961, in Gallup, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Tsenabahilnii (Sleep Rock People Clan). He died Oct. 29, 2014, in Church Rock, N.M.

Wilford attended school up to the 6th grade in Church Rock and worked odd jobs.

Wilford is survived by Mary Lou Miller, Marjorie Begay of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ernest L. Begay of Albuquerque.

Wilford is preceded in death by Wilson Begay, Tommy Begay, Joe Begay, Sam Begay, Sheilia Hollinger, Willie Harrison Sr., and Sarah Harrison.

Pallbearers were family members.

Gabriel John Roberts

GALLUP — Funeral services for Gabriel John Roberts, 26, were held Nov. 3 at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Interment followed at the family plot in Pinedale, N.M.

Gabriel was born Oct. 23, 1988, in Gallup, into the Dziltl’ahnii (Mountain Cove Clan), born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). His nali is Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle); chei is Kiyaa’aanii (Towering House). He died Oct. 24, 2014, in Coyote Canyon, N.M.

Gabriel attended Wingate Elementary and Middle School, Aztec High School and Gallup Junior High School. He was employed as a construction worker and worked with Gallup Paving. He was outgoing, loved meeting new people and spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed joking around, spreading the word of the Lord, cooking out, swimming, bowling, fishing, camping, and was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Gabriel is survived by his sons, Nandin Roberts and Gavriel Roberts; sisters, Treva Smith, Tiffany Roberts and Danielle Roberts; brother, Craig Roberts; parents, Geneva and Nathaniel Roberts; and grandparents, Lewis Largo Sr. and Jessie Largo, Guy Smith and Emma Nelson.

Gabriel is preceded in death by his grandfather, John Roberts.

Pallbearers were Cyrus Yazzie, Gary Willie, Leo Tsosie Jr., Kyle Smith, Shelton Six and Tyler Bowman.

Rollie Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
