Stephen Herman Ashley

TSE BONITO, N.M. — Funeral services for Stephen Herman Ashley, 73, of Phoenix, were held Oct. 29 at the Silver Creek Mortuary in Tse Bonito, N.M., with Martin Haven officiating. Interment followed in Fort Defiance.

Stephen was born April 13, 1941, in Fort Defiance, into the Naakai dine’é (Mexican Clan), born for çshiihi (Salt People Clan). He died Oct. 22, 2014, in Phoenix.

Stephen attended Anadarko High School and Haskell Indian Nations University. He was employed with NTUA, Window Rock Police Department and retired from Southern Pacific. He enjoyed mechanic work, Kung Fu, watching cowboy movies and listening to the radio.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Fannie Lee; sons, Jeremy Ashley and Vincent Ashley; daughters, Sheryl Ashley and Donna Ashley; brothers, Roy Ashley, Emerson Ashley and Nelson Ashley; sisters, Anita Ashley and Mary E. Hubbell; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Stephen is preceded in death by Fannie Ashley and Stephen Matthew Ashley; parents, Regis Ashley and Edith Billieson; and grandparents, Kinbah Hardy and Navaho Sam.

Pallbearers were Vincent Ashley, Jeremy Ashley, Roy Ashley, Emerson Ashley, Adrian Clyde, and Ryan Ashley.

Honorary pallbearers were Jeremy Ashley and Vincent Ashley.

Silver Creek Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Ellen McBride

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Graveside service for Margaret Ellen McBride, 91, of Casa Grande, Ariz., were held Oct. 18 at the Mountain View Cemetery.

Margaret was born in Milan, Ohio, to Ernest and Hazel DeLamater. She died Oct. 14, 2014, at her home.

Margaret married Dwight Nelson McBride on Feb. 13, 1943. When the couple lived in Albuquerque, she was involved in church and Youth for Christ. In 1958 they started Crosslands Mission, a Navajo children’s home in Thoreau, N.M. Soon five girls and two boys were added to their family of two children.

Later they started Crosslands Navajo Church, where her husband was pastor until 1999, when the couple moved to Casa Grande. They started a church for winter visitors at Foothills West RV Resort and pastored there until 2011. She was actively involved in the city’s Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center and with the Helping Hands Caring Hearts Ladies Group.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Ben Ichikawa of Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, John McBride of Joplin, Mo., and Tim and Mark McBride of Albuquerque; daughters, Judy Haynes of Henderson, Nev., Maureen Largo of Albuquerque, Elise Johnson of Casa Grande, Clara Lebsack of Tucson, and Sue House of Thoreau; sister, Pearl Gaag of Norwalk, Ohio; brother, Kenneth DeLamater of Milan, Ohio; and 22 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, daughter, three brothers and a sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to Crosslands Navajo Church.
