FORT DEFIANCE

Post-season honors continue to pour in for Pinon senior volleyball standout Raquel Archie.

Archie was named Dairy Council of Arizona All-American during the 29th annual Fall High School All-American awards banquet at American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek, Ariz. She was one of six volleyball players earning the honor.

“It is a pleasure to present the All-American honor to Raquel,” said All-American Chairperson Tot Workman. “She is well-deserving of the honor. She is one of two All-American student/athletes from the Navajo Nation. It is always an honor to have student/athletes from the Navajo Nation.”

Pinon coach Nellie McCurtain nominated Archie for the award.

“Raquel was our middle blocker/hitter,” McCurtain said. “She was the heart and soul of the team. Everyone looked to her for direction on and off the court. Not only did she play middle, she was an all-around volleyball player. She was an excellent passer, setter and digger.”

McCurtain said Archie was a very intelligent player that knew the game of volleyball and applied her smartness to every play this past year.

“Raquel’s leadership was unbelievable,” McCurtain explained. “She communicated with her team members on the court and kept them focus throughout the season. She is a very sweet and nice person. She was very coachable. She came to practice every day and worked hard on what was planned by the coaching staff. After practice, she stayed another hour or two and practiced her attacks.”

McCurtain said Archie made her job as a coach easier and enjoyable.

“It’s a great feeling looking back, taking the state championship with an intelligent player (Archie) and the team,” McCurtain said.
