Tuba City advances, MV loses heartbreaker

The Tuba City Lady Warriors has a way of making volleyball look easy.

The Safford Bulldogs found that out on Friday as Tuba City took out the tournament’s No. 2 seed during the quarterfinals of the Arizona Division III state volleyball championships.

The Warriors won the match 25-6, 29-27, 25-12 and scored a mild upset as the No. 7 seed.

“In this type of environment you can’t underestimate

On Saturday, the Warriors will play with No. 3 Flagstaff at 1:00 p.m. with the survivor moving into the championship game. The Eagles beat Florence 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 in their quarterfinal game.

Interestingly enough, this matchup pits two former state champions from a year ago as Flagstaff moved down a classification.

In other tournament action, the Monument Valley Mustangs were eliminated as they dropped a 22-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-7, 15-12 decision to Glendale Cactus.

“We started off real well but we got a little too comfortable knowing that we had a 2-0 set lead,” Monument Valley coach Rennell Gilmore said. “Giving Cactus that (opening) got them back up. I wish that we kept that momentum up but the girls did a great job.

“They did their best and that’s all I can ask from them,” she added.
