Basha's Jeff Preator grabs a hold of Tuba City's Michael Humetewa in the 120-pound weight class at the 50th annual Doc Wright Invitational in Winslow on Friday.

Last year the Tuba City Warriors took three wrestlers to state.

This year, they are hoping to qualify six for next month's Division IV state wrestling tournament headed by seniors Trayston Gordy and Frankie Begay.

“They are my most experienced wrestlers," Tuba City coach Brandon Williams said of Gordy and Begaye. “They are the backbone of the team and they bring a lot of influences to the other members on the team.

“They tell them how to get it done," he added.

Begaye is a two-time state qualifier at 138 pounds while Gordy earned his first qualification in the 220-pound category. Begaye placed fifth at state last year.
