It took 32 minutes for the Portales Rams to get the best of Wingate in the opening round of the New Mexico Class 3A boys state basketball tournament.

The Bears gave Portales all they could handle before the Rams came away with a tough 53-49 win on Saturday at Wingate High School.

"Give credit to coach (Rickie) McBroom and his team," Wingate coach Al Martinez said. "They handled business today and that's the way it goes."

Despite winning by four points, Portales did have a distinct advantage in the rebound department. The Rams finished the game with 39 boards with 18 coming on the offensive end, which led to 19 second-chance points.
