After being cooped up in the gym for the last four months, most of the area teams were still trying to find their stride at the recent Laguna-Acoma track meet on Saturday.

St. Michael's won the team title as the Santa Fe-based school dominated the meet with the boys scoring 121 points while girls racked up 119 points.

Shiprock placed second with 59 points in the boys' portion and finished ahead of Laguna-Acoma (46) and Gallup (42).

"I think it went really well for us," Shiprock coach Brian Paniagua said. "I wasn't expecting a second place finish but we did have a couple of first place finishers."

The Chieftains had senior McKalin Newman place first in the long jump with a 18-feet, 6-inch effort while junior Fernando Gutierrez earned top honors in the 200-meter dash with a 23.46 effort.
