When in a tough soccer district, a key to success is confidence.

That’s something the Kirtland Central Lady Broncos learned on Sept. 11 when they won their first District 1-A/4A soccer game against Rehoboth.

The Lady Broncos defeated Rehoboth 5-0 and will travel to Sandia Prep today for their second district match.

Kirtland Central head coach Leonel Camacho said the victory is what his team needs as they head into stiff district competition. He said the district is home to the state champion Hope Christian and state runner-up Sandia Prep.

“We needed to start with a win,” he said. “There’s just no better teams to play. Those are all late round games at state, so one of the things we need to focus on is recognizing what our strengths are. It’s going to be hard to exploit the weaknesses of those two teams."

But they exploited the weakness of Rehoboth.

Camacho said he and his coaching staff watched Rehoboth play Bosque earlier in the week so they knew what they needed to do.

“I prepared the girls. I knew who their main players were, I knew who they send to the wings, who their keepers were,” Camacho said. “I’ve got a good group of girls and they’re still young. We’re building the program and we’re excited.”
