Monument Valley’s Taylor Worker tips the ball over two Piedra Vista defenders during the championship match of Piedra Vista’s Panther Classic held Sept. 12-13. Worker played a key role in the Lady Mustang’s success.

The Monument Valley Lady Mustangs let everyone know that they’re not messing around.

The Lady Mustangs defeated archrivals and host team Piedra Vista 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-20) for first place in the gold bracket of the Panther Classic held Sept. 12-13.

Monument Valley head coach Renell Gilmore said the win proved that the girls were capable but to win in three games said a lot more.

“With the way that we closed that game, especially in three, it shows that we’re working hard. We’re not just messing around in the gym. These girls have a goal,” she said. “These good games are going to help us prepare for November."

The Lady Mustangs are now undefeated, 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Division III, Section I. Their next match was on Sept. 16 at Flagstaff. Results were not available by deadline.

Gilmore said with eight seniors the team has set some high standards.

She said there are some wrongs from last season that they’d like to make right and it takes games like the one with Piedra Vista to make it happen. She said the pressure keeps them on their toes so that they can win tough matches.

The two teams have a history of playing tight games, including a match just two weeks before where Monument Valley won in five sets.

“It’s fun. It’s nice to give the girls the impression that they’re always going to be a target on our back, we always have to bring our ‘A’ game,” Gilmore said. “For us to close it in three is really big.”
