Mikel Bonner (second from left) goes after a loose ball during a game between Winslow and Page on Sept. 1. Bonner (homecoming king) is one of the standouts on the Bulldog team.

Winslow senior quarterback Ricardo Villanueva Jr. picked apart Page’s defense as he threw four touchdown passes to pace the Bulldogs over the Sand Devils, 40-20, at Emile Nassar Memorial Stadium in Winslow.

Villanueva, Navajo/Hispanic, is billed as one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Arizona.

Winslow head coach Brandon Guzman said Villanueva was the team leader in the Bulldogs’ victory.

“He had a great night,” Guzman said.

Guzman said Page knew Winslow was down at its middle linebacker position and they ran the ball up the middle. He said the Bulldogs need to correct that.

Villanueva completed 5-of-9 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns.

He also connected with sophomore wide receiver Yoann Djassa for two touchdown passes. Djassa caught two passes for 106 yards.

Senior wide receiver Jalen Lyons hauled in one pass for 66 yards and one touchdown.

Villanueva connected with Mikel Bonner for two passes for 26 yards and one touchdown. Bonner rushed for 18 yards on five rushes and one touchdown.

The Bulldogs rushed for 123 yards. Running back Damon Avelar rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries.

First-year Page head coach Mitchell Stephens said turnovers hurt the Sand Devils throughout the game.

Page fumbled seven times, losing four fumbles. The Sand Devils threw two pass interceptions.

“Our defense played decent, but gave up a few big plays,” Stephens said. “Hayden Gracia played well creating confusion on the defensive line. Austin Green made several tackles.”
