Page overcomes turnovers, penalties in win over Bulldogs

WINDOW ROCK

This was not Page at its best.

Last Friday night, the Sand Devils’ high-powered offense struggled at times. Nonetheless Page made enough plays to pull out a 22-12 victory over Winslow in prep football.

“We had some turnovers and penalties that stalled the offense a few times,” Page second-year coach Mitchell Stephens said. “The run game was still efficient but we weren’t able to throw as well as we’ve done the past few weeks.”

To keep their perfect season intact, Stephens said his team forced several turnovers, notably a pick-6 that ended Winslow’s final attempt to draw any closer late in the game.
“Our kids never gave up. Even when things weren’t going well, we continued to work and made big plays when they were needed,” he said.

With the 10-point victory, Page improved to 3-0 with wins over Payson, Florence and Winslow. Those wins bode well for Stephens, as this will help the Sand Devils when it comes to state seeding.

“We’re excited about the success that we’re having. Each week we know that we have to make improvements. Defeating ranked teams definitely helps with the rankings,” he said.
“We were a little disappointed at where we were ranked last year. In order to accomplish what we desire, we need to win big games. The next two games will be very important and difficult games. We’ll then have a bye week to prepare for region play.”
