Tuba City leads 3A North, sweeps Ganado

BURNSIDE JUNCTION, Ariz.

Utilizing its offensive prowess and solid pitching, the Tuba City Warriors swept a doubleheader from the Ganado Hornets in 3A North Region baseball action under cold weather conditions at Burnside Junction.

Tuba City blanked Ganado, 12-0, in the first game in a five-inning contest. The Warriors completed the doubleheader sweep, 18-5, in the nightcap, which ended in the sixth inning.
Tuba City head coach Henry Henderson said the Warriors nailed down two important 3A North Region victories.

“There is a pitching limit, so we used our pitchers wisely,” Henderson said. “Our pitchers did a good job today. Due to pitch count, our pitchers have to throw strikes and they did that today.
“Our bats are coming around,” he said. “We made contact and we put the ball into play. The regular season is winding down and we’re playing solid baseball.”

Tuba City improves their overall record 12-4 and, more importantly, 7-0 in 3A North Region play. Two weeks remain in the regular season. On April 20, the first round of the 3A North Regional Baseball Tournament is scheduled. The regional baseball tournament is set for April 22 in Tuba City.

The Warriors are competing in the Chandler Prep Baseball Tournament today through Saturday at various venues in the Valley.

“We’re playing good competition at the Chandler Prep tournament,” Henderson said. “The weather will be warm. We’re looking forward to the tournament.”

Ganado dropped to 3-4 on the season. The Hornets are 0-4 in 3A North Region standings.

Ganado first-year head coach Fred Miller said mistakes hurt the Hornets’ performance.

“We had too many errors,” Miller said. “We committed fielding errors which led to unearned runs for Tuba City. We played well at times, but we need to play consistently.”

Tuba City jumped on Ganado starting right-hand pitcher Jayme James for three runs in the first inning.
