Everything about Bloomfield High School volleyball team winning their home tournament was mind over matter.

It didn’t matter that they hadn’t won the Bloomfield Invite in about five years or that every team they met challenged them, because for the first time in a long time, they knew they too could be the best.

Bloomfield High School head coach Rae Collins said the team has had trouble with their mental game over the years and now, after much work, they developed a newfound confidence that pushes them beyond limits they once set for themselves.

“We’ve been working a lot on our mental game,” Collins said. “These are things that we have been working on so we can set the little goals to help us get to the bigger goals.”

Winning their tournament last weekend and defeating Crownpoint High School 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23), was a small goal.

Collins said it wasn’t necessarily the win, but how her team accomplished it. She said they closed the first game 25-20 but Crownpoint gave them trouble in the second game to tie the set 1-1.
She said the old Bloomfield team would have folded in the tied situation but it instead lit a fire under them.

“We kind of let down the second game. We were up and we just kind of let them back in so they took the second game,” she said. “That ignited the girls and they were able to get game three and game four. It was a good mental boost for the girls, for them to overcome and for them to battle back, to be able to hang in there for two more games.”
