A Sawmill, Ariz., man was found dead under a vehicle on County Road 315 on June 2.

Police are still investigating the incident since they don't know for certain who the driver of the vehicle was. The victim, however, has been identified as Kiefer Brown, 20.

Police received a phone call from someone who saw the vehicle and body on the road. Police said the victim was partially ejected when the vehicle rolled over.

25-year-old struck by vehicle

Navajo police are also investigating a vehicle/pedestrian accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 491 near Newcomb High School on June 16.

The victim was identified as Kandice R. Woody, 25, unknown address.

It began with a call to police about 9 p.m. that there was a female walking along the middle of the highway. A police unit was dispatched but before it reached the scene, the dispatcher call in another report that the woman had been hit and that an ambulance was on the way.



By the time the unit arrived, the victim was still breathing and had a pulse, although she was unconscious. Ten minutes later, however, police reported no signs of life but continued to do CPR for 20 minutes until emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Woody said she was walking north in the middle of the road as he was driving south. She appeared out of nowhere, he told police.

The police report noted that she was wearing dark clothes and was suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the accident. Gary, according to police, showed no signs of being impaired.

Window Rock woman run over

Another pedestrian/car accident that is just now being reported occurred on May 3 in Wide Ruins, Ariz.

The victim in this case was Raynelda Edison, 25, of Window Rock.

According to police, she was drinking that day with Diana Begay, 36, of Church Rock and Raymond Edison Jr., 21 of Window Rock. Raymond Edison and Begay got into a verbal fight that let to both of the Edisons pushing and hitting Begay, according to police.

Begay decided to leave and got in her vehicle but as she moved forward, she found herself in a ditch. She reversed and hit Reynelda Edison, running over her.

Begay told police that she was unaware that she ran over anyone and kept on going. She returned a little later and was told by Raymond Edison that she ran over Reynelda. It was at this time that Raymond Edison began beating Begay again, causing her to flee.

The victim was flown to the Flagstaff Medical center for treatment of injuries to her pelvic area.

The department's criminal investigation division has been given the case.

Woman hit with wooden chair

Police are investigating an aggravated battery that occurred in Shonto, Ariz., on May 16.

According to police, Leander Begay, 26, of Shonto struck Shirley Bia, 61, also of Shonto, several times over the head with a wooden chair.

Bia was later found on the street yelling and crying and was taken to the Tuba City medical Center. Begay was arrested and charged with aggravated battery.

Another aggravated battery occurred on June 21 in Jeddito, Ariz.

On that date, Dawn Hoskie called police and reported that she had found Anselm Yesslith, 57, of Jeddito, in his bed at his home unconscious.

She later told police that earlier that day, a group of men had come by her house looking for Yesslith and threatening to do him bodily harm.

She was able to identify three of the persons in the group - Lawtherio Yazzie, 21; Jerry Yazzie, no age given, and Xavier Chee, 22, all of Jeddito.

She told him Yesslith wasn't there and they left. She old police she got worried and went looking for him at his home but he wasn't there either.

She then went looking in other places and eventually came back to the house where she saw his vehicle parked outside. Both the vehicle and the house appeared to have been damaged.

Inside, she found Yesslith, who appeared to have been beaten. He was later flown to the Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment.

Police said one of the three suspects was later arrested but did not specify which one. The case has been turned over to CID and the FBI.

Ganado man stabbed

A Ganado man received life-threatening injuries when he was stabbed several times to the chest on June 2 near Wood Spring, Ariz.

The police were notified of the incident by staff at Sage Memorial Hospital who reported that Daron D. James, 21, had been left off in the emergency room by a man who later was identified as Herman McCabe, 19, of Wood Spring.

No details were given as to what occurred but police listed Vanessa F. James, 22, of Wood Spring, as a person of interest in this case.

James was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center for what looked to be a collapsed lung.

Man killed in rollover

A one-vehicle rollover with fatality occurred on Navajo Route 334 near Crystal, N.M., on June 5.

The victim was identified as Alexander Arviso, 36, of Crystal. Police said the victim was apparently ejected during the rollover and died.

CID is investigating.

Alcohol suspected in death

Navajo police are investigating what a death of unknown causes.

The victim was identified as Geoffry Francis, 32, of Cornfields, Ariz.

He was brought to the emergency room at the Fort Defiance Hospital on June 9. He had no pulse or signs of life.

A female driver, who was not identified, said she picked up Francis and three other men, one of whom was her son, earlier that day near Lowe's in Gallup.

They drove to the Sagebrush Lounge on U.S. Highway 264 west of Yah-Ta-Hey, N.M., and purchased a liter of vodka and then drove back to Gallup, stopping several places along the way.

The victim passed out in Gallup and later when the group looked at him, he appeared to have no pulse or signs of life. By this time they were headed back to Fort Defiance and decided to take him to the hospital.

One of the occupants in the car told police that the victim had white stuff around his mouth. The body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Albuquerque for an autopsy.

Chase ends with arrests

AZTEC. N.M. - On June 18, at approximately 7:04 p.m., San Juan County deputies responded to an "attempt to locate" call. The call originated as a possible kidnapping from the area of the 10-mile marker on County Road 3000 in Aztec, N.M.

"The individual who had made the call to dispatch had reported that they had seen several people grab a man and throw him into a silver van," explained Deputy Samuel Cordova. "They also reported that the driver of the van driving erratically and was possibly a drunk driver."

Cordova was able to get behind the vehicle and begin following it at the intersection of Browning and East Main.

The suspect vehicle ran a red light at Sullivan and turned west on San Juan Blvd. It ran the stop sign at that intersection. The vehicle then proceeded to Butler and turned south. The suspect vehicle proceeded through the red light at Butler and Broadway. A Farmington Police unit then joined the pursuit.

The pursuit continued south on Highway 371. The vehicle sped to speeds between 60 and 95 mph while on Highway 371. The pursuit continued to approximately the 26-mile marker when NMSP Officer Gerald Todacheenie successfully deployed stop sticks.

The driver of the vehicle was Tanya Lopez, 35, of Nageezi, N.M. A warrant was issued for first aggravated DWI, aggravated fleeing, stop light violation (four counts), stop sign violation, speeding 30 over, speeding 15 over, suspended license, and reckless driving.

The front right passenger was Alexis Marquez, 28, of Bloomfield, N.M. He was charged with a parole violation.

The third passenger was the supposed victim of kidnapping, Jimmy Paul, 43. Marquez said Paul was extremely intoxicated. Paul advised he went with Marquez and Lopez willingly.

All three subjects were left in the custody of Crownpoint Police.

Patrols stepped up for July 4th

AZTEC, N.M. - The San Juan County Sheriff's Office will be working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies during the July 4th weekend and throughout July to make sure roads are safe and everyone has an enjoyable holiday.

Several saturation patrols and checkpoints will be proactive in looking for those who choose to drive drunk. Please make a quality choice this holiday season and celebrate your freedoms as an American.

Kick kills fetus in mother

PHOENIX - Fernando Woody, 28, of Fort Defiance, Ariz., was sentenced June 16 to 10 years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Woody admitted that he kicked the mother of his child in the stomach while wearing boots.

The mother was pregnant at the time and the unborn child suffered a skull fracture and other injuries as a result of the assault. The injuries caused the death of the child in utero.

Man indicted for setting fires

FLAGSTAFF - The Coconino County Attorney's Office announced that Obrian Wilson Kee was indicted by the Coconino County Grand Jury on June 16.

The grand jury returned a 12-count indictment containing one class 3 felony charge for burning of wildlands, as well as multiple counts for criminal damage and endangerment.

The indictment in this matter resulted from a joint investigation conducted by the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the United States Forest Service following a series of fires east of Flagstaff on June 8.

Quick action by firefighters, including air tankers, kept the fires from growing and potentially destroying many homes, said County Attorney David Rozema.

Man sentenced for shotgun shooting

ALBUQUERQUE - Calbert Henderson, 29, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced June 17 to two years in prison to be followed by two years of supervised release based on his assault with a dangerous weapon conviction, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Henderson pleaded guilty to shooting two individuals on Jan. 31, 2010, in Jones Ranch, N.M.

According to the criminal complaint, Henderson was driving his vehicle up a driveway, one of his victims (Victim A) was reversing down the driveway and crashed into Henderson's vehicle. Victim A reacted to the crash by pushing and yelling at Henderson.

As Henderson attempted to drive away, Victim A began hitting Henderson's vehicle as he ran along the side of the vehicle. Henderson responded by grabbing a handgun and firing several shots at Victim A.

Victim A was shot in the groin, causing trauma to his upper left thigh, and the other victim of Henderson's assault was shot through the base of her right thumb.

Agencies team up for sex offender operation

AZTEC, N.M. - On June 15, at 2 p.m., the San Juan County Sheriff's Office Sex Offender Registration Unit teamed up with the San Juan County Special Enforcement Team, U.S. Marshal's, Attorney General's Office, State Police, State Probation and Parole (Albuquerque and Farmington), and Navajo Police Department for a county-wide sex offender validation operation, according to a news release by the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.

The purpose of this operation was to ensure that sex offenders in San Juan County were in fact living at the location that they listed with the sheriff's Office. During the operation the team verified 121 registered sex offenders, arrested two individuals, one parole violation, located two offenders that failed to register, and a misdemeanor citation for marijuana.

Currently, there are 380 individuals that are tracked in the San Juan County area to include offenders that are currently incarcerated or registered in the past. The current number of offenders registered in San Juan County is 280. These numbers show more than 180 offenders residing within the state jurisdiction. More than 100 registered sex offenders reside on the Navajo Nation.

Wide Ruins man sentenced for sexual contact

PHOENIX - Charles Tsosie Ashley, 62, of Wide Ruins, Ariz., was sentenced June 15 to six years in prison for abusive sexual contact of a minor, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

The defendant admitted to touching the buttocks of a 9-year-old boy while the boy was visiting the defendant.

Ashley will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
