Gates Millennium scholar Shaandiin Parrish, left, and Marquel Begay, who put together scholarships and Pell grants to fund her education, attend the DinéVOTE Youth Rally in Chinle last Thursday. The class of 2016 will be the last class to be eligible for the Gates Millennium Scholarship.

The class of 2016 will be the last class to have the opportunity to apply for the daddy of all scholarships, the Gates Millennium, which funds a student’s education for 10 years through the Ph.D. level.

“It was a 20-year investment, or until the money ran out,” explained Christa Moya, director of financial aid and student services for the Gates Millennium. “It’s been darned near 20 years.”

It’s hard news for Diane Fuller, the former Monument Valley High School English teacher who has (so far) helped 62 students get the Gates.
