Joe Tohonnie Jr., 34, has been nominated for a Grammy in the best regional roots music album Dec. 6 for his "Apache Blessings & Crown Dance Songs." In this photo, he performed during the 4th annual Monument Valley Balloon Event last month.

Joe Tohonnie Jr. earned a Grammy nomination in the best regional roots music album Dec. 6, marking recognitions for his "Apache Blessings & Crown Dance Songs."

"It's pretty cool," said Tohonnie, 34, a Dzilghá'á Diné who found out about his nomination right before Thanksgiving. "I'm very happy."

"I already got the call. They (asked), 'Is this Joe Tohonnie?' I said, 'Yes.' I thought it was a … joke because everybody always plays games on me.

"(They) said, 'Mr. Tohonnie?' I said, 'Yes.' 'Congratulations, your Apache Blessings & Crown Dance Songs album (label) Cool Runnings was nominated.' I (retorted), 'Oh, yeah right!' and I hung up on that guy."

Hanging up on "that guy" wasn't the best thing to do.
