T he 65th annual Gallup Lions Club rodeo was home to some big winners last weekend.

The annual rodeo was held at Red Rock Park from June 13-15. The rodeo had about $65,000 in cash payout and about $22,000 in added prize money.

The timed events included breakaway roping, steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and team roping. The rough stock events included bareback, saddle bronc, junior bull riding and bull riding.

In the timed events, team roping paid out the most money as first-place finishers Aaron Tsinigini and James Begay, Jr., roped their draw in 4.81 seconds and earned a winning check of $1,947 each.

Falling in second place was the team of Travis Whitlow and Victor Aros. They stopped the clock in 4.88 seconds and earned $1,586 each in prize money.

In the women's category, breakaway roping had the highest amount of prize money. Tenai Lansing earned $1,391 for roping her draw in 2.3 seconds, finishing ahead of Sheila Sells-Denny who turned in a 2.58 run.

Denny said she was in the middle of her season and was looking to break her losing streak.

"Everything went the way I wanted it to … I finally really paid attention, made sure I did everything I was supposed," Denny said. "(I) just needed to relax."

Sells said she hoped to end her month-long losing streak, and to possibly start a winning streak as she prepares for the Indian National Finals Rodeo tour in California this weekend.

She credited her horse Breeze for her finish.

"I wouldn't have done so well without my horse. He works so well with me," she said. "That's (the winnings) going to help me go out to California."

Other local favorites who finished at the top in the timed events included: Kyle Francis in the steer wrestling event with a time of 6.43 and $1,207 in cash prizes; JD Kibbe in the calf roping with a time of 9.45 and $1,324 in prize money; and Marisa Simpson in barrel racing with a time of 15.954 and $1,140 in prizes.
