Diné youth showcase talent at 41st annual Song and Dance Festival

Unlike most other schools, students from Rough Rock Community School begin preparation for the biggest song and dance festival on the reservation when school year begins.

The paid off for them as they walked away with hardware – six second-place trophies and a first-place trophy– in the primary division of the 41st annual Song and Dance Festival, held at the Rock Point Community School from Jan. 29 to 30.

"We try our hardest every year," said Christina Jones, a teacher at the Rough Rock school and sponsor of the group. "So we were proud of it this year because we placed in every event and this is the first time we've won the highest point award."

In addition to the seven trophies, they group took home a plaque for the highest-points category. Jones took 28 students from kindergarten to fifth-grade to compete.
