Tuba City rolls over Hornets

BURNSIDE, Ariz., Sept. 25, 2008

A s 3A North regional football action kicked off last Friday, Tuba City was winless.

However, Tuba City (1-3, 1-0) got their first win of the season over conference rival Ganado in a 39-0 win.

Tuba City's three losses were to Montezuma-Cortez (42-14), Page (72-0) and Chino Valley (36-0).

Against Ganado, Tuba City had a balanced attack on offense and a stiff defense as they easily handled the Hornets, who have now lost three straight games.

Tuba City was led by senior running back Tyrell Begay who scored three touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 10 yards in the first quarter, 11 yards in the second quarter and 6 yards in the third quarter.

Begay finished the night with 189 yards rushing.

Tuba City led after the first quarter, 6-0, and 20-0 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter, the Warriors built their lead to 26-0 and added another 13 points in the fourth quarter for a the final score.

Tuba City also had a 5-yard touchdown run from senior backup running back Michael Dee in the fourth quarter.

Adding to the rushing attack, 267-pounder Derrick Ray also had a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Senior quarterback Nicholas Curley threw a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Curley was injured in the third quarter and was taken off the field and was replaced by backup quarterback Quinn Honanie.

On the evening, Tuba City had 253 total yards to Ganado's 170.

Ganado didn't have Cody Miller, the starting running back and all-conference player last year, who injured his leg last week against Alchesay.

Tuba City will host Holbrook at home Friday. Ganado travels to Winslow in another important conference game.

In other 3A action, Alchesay defeated Holbrook last Friday, 50-48. Alchesay won the game in overtime when Frank Larzelere scored on a 2-yard run and the Falcons added the two extra points for the win.

Holbrook countered with its own 1-yard touchdown but was unable to get the 2-point conversion. Holbrook was led by James Lerma who rushed for 109 yards on 14 carries and Adrian Perkins who rushed for 165 yards on 23 carries.

Holbrook drops to 1-3 and will play their first conference game Friday at Tuba City.

Alchesay is 4-0 and was led by senior running back Stephone Hanna who rushed for 191 yards on 26 carries.

In other 3A North games, Window Rock improved to 3-1 with a win over Chinle, 40-10. Chinle drops to 2-2 and 0-1 in conference.

Window Rock hosts Monument Valley on Friday. Chinle has this week off and plays Tuba City on Oct. 3 at home.
