Garrison Begay wins all-around at Central Fair Rodeo

With the AIRCA 2009 season winding down, AIRCA members are heading to Pine Hill, N.M., for the 17th Ramah Navajo Fair Rodeo this weekend, Aug. 28 and 29, according to an AIRCA press release.
Last weekend, at the “Where the Highway Ends, the Wild West Begins” CNRA- and AIRCA-sanctioned 24th Central Navajo Fair Rodeo in Pinon, Garrison Begay won all-around honors.
Begay tied his calf in 9.21 seconds, finishing third and winning $224, and wrestled his steer in 5.79 seconds for fourth place and $169.
He was awarded a $1,000 bonus for the all-around title, for a total of $1,393. Begay now leads the season AIRCA all-around standings with over $7,000.
In other events, Robert Burbank won the saddle bronc event with a score of 71, winning $532. Alonzo Yazzie was second with a 70, good for $356.
Bennie Begay scored a 72 to win the bareback, earning $535. Clifford Williams was second with a 71-point ride, winning $356.
Robin Showa won the bull-riding event with a 77, earning $527. Jaran Martin, Bradford Heath and Ivan Sells tied at 73 and received $263 each.
Amanda Clawson of Breadsprings, N.M., won the barrel race with a 17.583, winning $468. Charmayne Gene ran a 17.636, winning $390, followed by Misty Begay, Tia Begay and Gabriela Whitethorn with times of 17.656 ($312), 17.772 ($234) and 17.773 ($156), respectively.
In the ladies breakaway roping, Reneille Sells was first with a time of 2.91, winning $527. Twila Jones scored a 3.02, winning $440. Also in the three-second breakaway roping contest, Devyn Dennison, Kassidy Dennison and Joni Begay rounded out the winners with times of 3.04 ($351), 3.12 ($264) and 3.35 ($175), respectively.
In steer wrestling, Kyle Dean Dennison was first with a time of 4.93, winning $668. Randy Claw was second with a 5.03, winning $501, followed by Donovan Yazzie (5.16, $334) and Begay placing fourth.
In the tie-down event, Lucius Sells was first with an 8.49, winning $448, followed by Justin Tsosie Jr. (8.79, $336), Begay and Leroy Etsitty in fourth place (9.38, $114).
In the senior breakaway roping, John Boyd Jr. turned in a 2.40 time, earning $390. Karl Dennison was second with a 2.57, good for $234. Olsen Redhorse was third with a 2.68 and $157.
In open team roping, Denton Begay and Alphonso Begay won with a 6.45, sharing $1,182. Henry Benally Jr. and Henry Benally III had a 6.59 and split $985 for second place. Benally III heeled for Colin Begay to win third, splitting $788 for their 6.63 time. Chuck and Art Sells took fourth with a time of 7.40 and divided $591. Cody Hunter and Kevin Yazzie were fifth with a 7.45, sharing $395.
Lance Boyd and Clayton Slick won the No. 12 team roping with a 7.31, splitting $890. Reginald Tso and Geoff Claw followed with a time of 7.83, sharing $668. Daryl Morris and Shariff Sells had a time of 8.16, winning $445 for third and Daryl Morris and Kyle Little were timed in 8.49 seconds, dividing $222.
In the No. 9 team roping, Corwin Begay and Truman Begay had the fastest time of 6.44, winning $1,230. Second were Richard Lynch and Jim Baldwin (7.58, $1,034), third were Cody Ben and Cameron Sells (7.61, $837), fourth were Sheila Sells and Blane Redhorse (7.93, $690), fifth were Savannah Begay and Kee Etsitty (8.30, $542), sixth were Ty Dayzie and Troy Begay (8.45, $394) and seventh were Austin Bahe and Derrick Joe (8.51, $198).
At Pine Hill, the cowboys and cowgirls will compete for a total of $4,500 in added purse.
