For a former president who is now seeking his third term in office, Joe Shirley Jr.’s name doesn’t appear that much in the media.

And when it does, it’s usually in a paragraph in a story about Chris Deschene and his ongoing struggles to fight challengers who say he is not qualified because he does not speak Navajo fluently.

But Shirley has been out there on the campaign trial, talking a little about the language controversy, but spending most of his time addressing the issues in his campaign which include the economy, jobs, housing, veterans and education.

"The continuance of government reform doesn’t come up very much but it is in our platform,” said Pat Sandoval, Shirley’s campaign manager.

Shirley, who was re-elected to the Apache County Board of Supervisors after he stepped down as president after two terms, is now spending six days a week on the campaign trail, some by himself and some with Dineh Benally, his running mate.
