Oak Ridge Fire canceled events, not lives

Yá’át’ééh shiDine’é,

Our reporter used the word “casualties” metaphorically in his lede to convey the idea that the Ahóóhai Days 4th of July Celebration and the Cody Jesus Invitational were significant losses caused by the Oak Ridge Fire. In sports journalism, especially in features or ledes meant to catch attention, the term “casualty” is sometimes used to describe not just human injuries or deaths, but events, plans, or opportunities that are abruptly ended, disrupted, or “lost” because of a larger crisis – in this case, the wildfire.

Impact emphasis: Our reporter wanted to quickly highlight that the fire isn’t just burning land – it’s already impacting parts of community life.

For many Diné families, rodeos are more than just sporting events – they are cultural gatherings that celebrate skill, resilience, and community pride. Generations of Diné cowboys and cowgirls have built deep connections to the rodeo arena, where competing is often a family tradition and a way of life. Events like the Cody Jesus Invitational are opportunities to showcase talent, honor local champions, and bring communities together. When such events are canceled, it’s not just the loss of a competition – it’s the loss of a cherished moment of connection, tradition, and celebration that many look forward to all year. For participants and spectators alike, the disappointment runs deep.

On behalf of the Navajo Times, I apologize for the confusion caused by our use of the word “casualties” in our recent story about the cancellation of events. In this context, we intended to convey that the fire had led to the cancellation of community events, not that there were injuries or loss of life. I regret any misunderstanding this may have caused and appreciate our readers for holding us, the Diné Bi Naaltsoos, to high standards of clarity and accuracy. Thank you for your understanding.

According to the BIA Wildland Fire Management – Navajo Region, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities related to the fire.

I hold the Navajo Times reporters, photographers and freelancers in the highest regard as champions of truth and defenders of democracy. I fully support and stand by their reporting.

Ahxéhee’.
