CHINLE – Fountain Fort Carson High School freshman Kara BiNali has etched her name into her school’s wrestling history by becoming the first freshman to place at the Colorado State High School Wrestling Tournament.

Competing in the 5A Division, BiNali secured an impressive 6th place finish, while also setting new school records for most wins and most pins in a single season. With an outstanding record of 34 wins and 27 pins, BiNali has not only proven herself on the mat but has also set a high bar for her future as a wrestler at Fountain Fort Carson.

Hailing from Colorado Springs, BiNali’s journey to the state tournament was full of hard work and dedication. Wrestling in one of the most competitive divisions in the state, she faced seasoned opponents, many of whom were upperclassmen with years of experience. Yet, BiNali’s patience and strategy allowed her to stand out, earning her a spot among the top wrestlers in Colorado.

Reflecting on her performance at the state tournament, BiNali shared, “I was really excited at first but also kind of nervous. My coach helped me gain confidence. He told me to start the day off strong and finish even better.”

Her coach, Justin Widhalm, describes BiNali as “a star” and “the brightest star in the universe.”

He added, “She comes into practice every day with a smile and brings an immeasurable light to our program. She’s the most fierce competitor but also one of the kindest human beings I’ve ever seen.”

Her father, Chee BiNali, who also wrestled and coached in Kayenta, expressed immense pride in his daughter.

“We’re very proud of her. She has a very strong work ethic. She goes to school, attends practice, and still finds time to get her homework done. She’s always smiling and has a positive attitude,” he said.

BiNali’s family, including her mother, has been a constant source of support, traveling with her to matches and cheering her on every step of the way.

BiNali’s success is not just a personal win but also a reflection of her whole team’s spirit.

“She braids our entire girls’ team’s hair before every meet,” coach Widhalm shared. “She’s very giving but still very tenacious. She hates to lose but doesn’t let that get in the way of enjoying the sport.”

Looking ahead, BiNali has her sights set on great accomplishments.

“My goal is to be a state champion,” she said. “I want to work on getting stronger and more conditioned in the off-season.”

Coach Widhalm has no doubt about her potential, stating, “She’s one of the few people I will literally say can accomplish whatever they put their mind to. I could see her as a state champion and even a college wrestler if she chooses that path.”

Beyond wrestling, BiNali aspires to become a veterinarian, inspired by her love for animals and her experiences growing up near livestock.

“I want to attend CSU Boulder and study to be a vet,” she said.

Her father added, “She’s always been passionate about animals. She’s had a lot of hands-on experience with her grandparents’ sheep and horses, and we’re excited to see where her future takes her.”

As the first freshman to place at state from her school and the holder of multiple school records, she has proven that she has a bright future ahead of her.
