Hopi boys, Pinon’s Adriano Joe win state titles
PHOENIX
The Hopi Bruins continue to dominate the high school cross-country scene.
Hopi’s storied cross-country program won its 25th straight state championship under the guidance of coaching legend Rick Baker last Saturday.
Hopi tallied an impressive 42 points as the Bruins placed five scoring runners in the top 15 slots.
Hopi freshman Diome Talaswaima, who finished second in 16:32, said it is a great honor to be part of the Bruins’ cross-country program.
“Winning the state championship is sweet,” said Talaswaima, who was the Bruins’ top runner throughout the season. “It is great to be part of history.”
Pinon sophomore sensation Adriano Joe topped an outstanding field of 181 competitors for his first state crown before a large crowd at Cave Creek Golf Course in northwest Phoenix. Joe crossed the finish line in 16:24 over the grueling 5K-course.
“I worked hard, during the offseason and during the season, for this honor,” Joe said. “I improved steadily throughout the season.”
