Shiprock girls to challenge KC for district title
This might be the year the District 1-A/4A girl’s golf title is up for grabs.
Last year, the Kirtland Central High School girl’s golf team won the title because there was no other girl’s team to compete with in the district.
Shiprock High School might change that this season as head coach Larenson Henderson said he has five girls he’s been working with in the preseason.
He said they haven’t had the strongest start but they have put in some work.
“Some girls came out and tried to hit a couple holes and kind of got frustrated with it,” he said. “I’m just trying to be patient with them… We got to practice everyday.”
The girls will be led by junior and multi-sport athlete, Tanisha Begay, who also plays volleyball.
Henderson said she didn’t make the cut for the state tournament last season but knowing her competitive nature, she’ll be eyeing to advance herself this season.
The Kirtland Central Lady Broncos return most of their core group this season.
They will be led by Kyla Jones, Daria Frank and Tigerlily Tsosie, just to name a few. Jones finished eighth in the state tournament last season.
Kirtland Central head coach Stephen Williams said the experienced returners will have a key role in how the team performs.
“She’s (Jones) got to anchor my team and do really big things for us, if we’re going to qualify as a team, but if she can start shooting some really good scores then we can get some of these younger guys up around her it’s going to be pretty good,” he said. “Daria Frank has been around a long time, she’s got some good skills too that she brings to the table.”
