Grangers keep hometown rodeo strong with a fresh format

WINDOW ROCK

The Western Navajo Fair is celebrating its 57th anniversary and the Granger family is looking to continue its rich tradition as the rodeo coordinators.

The husband-wife combo of Terrance and Denell Granger have been orchestrating the rodeo portion of the fair for about seven years, and they have changed the format for the two-day rodeo at the Tuba City Fairgrounds.

Unlike previous years, the 2025 Western Navajo Fair Open Rodeo will have two separate rodeos with daily payouts on Saturday and Sunday as this year’s fair will coincide with the Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The rodeo performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. on both days with the slack taking place on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

“This year’s fair does conflict with the INFR, but we’re going to run a rodeo no matter how many contestants we get,” Terrance said. “It’s fair season and the Western Navajo Fair has been good lately and it’s been building. Even though we are conflicting with the INFR, we still should get a pretty good number of contestants on both days.”

Terrance is expecting to see a lot of local cowboys and cowgirls at Saturday’s rodeo who are still in town. Those contestants can also compete on Sunday as a slew of cowboys and cowgirls will make their way to Tuba City after the INFR.

“We’ll have a lot of contestants who are making it back from the INFR stop by,” Terrance said. “They usually get entered in the slack and the performance, so Sunday is still a good day to rodeo.”
