PAGE, Ariz.
It was while attending Arizona State University that Marietta Ann Lange did ride-alongs with different police departments.
She found the work so enjoyable that she changed her course of study from psychology to criminal justice and sociology. She did in
ternships at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Phoenix where she worked in the probation and surveillance department.
In 2000, Lange moved home to Northern Arizona and got a job as a detention officer at Coconino County Detention Facility in Flagstaff.
There, a sergeant invited her to take a police officer entrance exam, which she says she was hesitant about.
Eventually in 2006, she decided to become a police officer and applied for a position at the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. For one year, she worked in Tuba City Police District’s Northern Substation under the late Sgt. Darrell C. Curley learning the tricks of the trade.
Page Police Chief Frank Balkcom Sr. late last month announced a promotion ceremony for three of the agency’s police officers including Lange, who on April 2 was promoted to sergeant and assigned to work in the criminal investigations division.
