NACE, ex-CEO dispute still simmering
LOS ANGELES
A settlement conference was held last week in an attempt to resolve the dispute between Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise and it’s former CEO, Barbara McGough.
The two sides have battled for more than a year over allegations regarding McGough’s pay while working for NACE. McGough has also filed a counter suit against NACE.
McGough took over as CEO in 2008 earning a salary of $120,000 a year. At the time, NACE was almost bankrupt and was having problems paying staff and vendors and there was talk it may shut down.
She was able to turn things around and as she did, her salary increased to $252,000 a year. She also received bonuses from $50,000 to $75,000.
In May of 2010, the board authorized a pay increase of $12,000, which was meant to be a one-year increase but the payroll department continued adding it to her salary without authorization from the board for the next six years, which amounted to a total of $262,000.
She was removed from her position by the board last year and the board is now trying to have her pay back the $252,000.
The suit also claims that between 2006 and 2010, McGough received $32,000 in unauthorized car payments for her use of her own personal car at a time when she was using a car furnished by the enterprise.
