3.7-magnitude earthquake shakes northeastern Arizona near Forest Lake Chapter

WINDOW ROCK

Residents across parts of the Forest Lake Chapter and surrounding areas of the Navajo Nation felt a moderate earthquake Friday morning when a 3.7-magnitude tremor struck the region, according to seismic data from the U.S. Geological Survey and monitoring services.

The quake occurred at approximately 11:38 a.m. Friday at a shallow depth of around 5.6 miles beneath the earth’s surface.

The epicenter was located roughly 26 miles south-southwest of Kayenta, near the Forest Lake Chapter.

Although moderate in size, quakes of this magnitude are common in the region’s geologic landscape and typically do not cause significant structural damage.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or property damage.

Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey continue to monitor seismic activity in the area.
