3G networks shut down as carriers focus on faster technologies

Cellular One and other mobile carriers are phasing out 3G networks to prioritize advanced technologies like 4G LTE and 5G.
The change is to improve call quality, internet speeds, and network coverage for users, ensuring better overall connectivity.
Cellular One recently announced the discontinuation of its 3G service, encouraging customers to upgrade to 4G or 5G devices. In 46 days, phones without 4G LTE or VoLTE (Voice over LTE) capabilities will no longer function on the updated network. The company is urging users to take action now to avoid losing service.
3G, first introduced in the early 2000s, was a major milestone in mobile technology, enabling internet access on cell phones for the first time. However, as demand for faster and more reliable services grew, its limitations became apparent. Carriers are now reallocating resources to newer networks to provide faster speeds and more efficient services.
Cellular One is not the only company retiring 3G. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have also shut down their 3G networks. AT&T ended its 3G service in February 2022, while Verizon followed later that year. T-Mobile completed the shutdown of the Sprint 3G network in March 2022 and its 3G network in July 2022.
Customers with older devices must upgrade to maintain access to mobile services. Cellular One and other carriers are offering support to help users transition to compatible devices. In some cases, plans include free replacements for outdated phones. Customers can check whether their current phone supports 4G LTE or VoLTE by reviewing network settings or contacting their provider.
In addition to upgrading devices, some users may need to replace older SIM cards to ensure compatibility with updated networks. Cellular One is providing free SIM card replacements for affected customers.
Voice over LTE is now essential for voice calls on 4G networks. Unlike older technology, VoLTE delivers clearer call quality and faster connection times. Most modern devices support VoLTE, making the transition smoother for users who upgrade their phones.
To prepare for the 3G shutdown, customers are advised to check their device compatibility, upgrade to a 4G LTE or 5G phone if necessary and ensure their SIM card supports the updated network. Carriers like Cellular One have resources available to assist users with this transition, including FAQs and customer service support.
The retirement of 3G marks the end of an important era in mobile technology but also signals a move toward improved communication capabilities. Cellular One and other carriers highlight that these upgrades will provide faster data speeds, better call quality, and more reliable network coverage.
Customers are encouraged to visit their carrier’s website or store for more information and assistance in transitioning to the improved network.
