CHINLE – Elouise Begay, the bookkeeper for Amá Dóó Áłchíní Bíghan Inc., began drafting a long-delayed wish list after staff were told the Chinle-based nonprofit would receive $500,000 in Arizona state funding to support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
That expectation unraveled about 13 months later, when ADABI Executive Director Lorena Halwood said she learned during a Dec. 30, 2025, meeting at the Office of the President and Vice President that the funding had been converted into a request-for-proposals process by the Navajo Nation Division for Children and Family Services. Halwood said ADABI was never notified that the money would be handled that way.
