Arviso resigns from 25th Navajo Nation Council

WINDOW ROCK

A member of the 25th Navajo Nation Council who represented six Eastern communities for the past three years resigned Friday to spend more time with his family, according to the Council.

Steven R. Arviso’s departure from the Council took effect Friday, Jan. 9, 2026. He was elected in January 2023 to represent Church Rock, Iyanbito, Mariano Lake, Pinedale, Smith Lake and Thoreau.

Arviso is Tséńjíkiní and born for Bit’ahnii. His maternal grandfather is Táchii’nii and his paternal grandfather is Tódích’íi’nii. He is from White Goat, New Mexico.

During his three years in office, Arviso held positions on the Law and Order Committee and served as vice chair of the Eastern Navajo Land Commission. He sponsored legislation on community development projects, including funding for a motor grader in Pinedale Chapter and approving changes to capital improvement projects in Smith Lake and Church Rock.

He reflected on his time in the Council with gratitude for the support he received.

“I am grateful to have served the people of my delegate region and thank everyone who supported me throughout my service,” Arviso said. “Together, we worked to advance important initiatives that will continue beyond my time on the Council.”

Speaker Crystalyne Curley said Arviso’s work benefited the Diné during his time in office.

“We are grateful for Delegate Arviso’s service and commitment to the Navajo people,” Curley said. “His leadership and dedication have made a positive impact, and we wish him and his family well moving forward.”

The six affected chapters have until late February to recommend a replacement. Each chapter can submit an official resolution by Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. naming their choice for the interim position.

Candidates must file applications and complete ethics clearances through the Navajo Election Administration. After a 10-day period for potential grievances, Curley will review the certified candidates and make an appointment based on the chapter recommendations.
