Attorney General Ethel Branch files application for special prosecutor
WINDOW ROCK
Navajo Nation Attorney General Ethel B. Branch filed an application today with the Special Division of the Window Rock District Court to appoint a special prosecutor for an investigation into serious misconduct allegations.
The attorney general received credible information suggesting possible misconduct or criminal activity involving CKP Insurance and certain officials of the Nation. A preliminary investigation indicated possible violations of federal or Navajo law, prompting the need for a special prosecutor.
The attorney general can conduct a preliminary investigation into possible legal violations. If there are grounds for further investigation, the attorney general can request the Special Division of the Window Rock District Court to appoint a special prosecutor. The Special Division must appoint one within 10 days from a list provided by the Attorney General. The special prosecutor will operate independently, following the Nation’s laws, regulations, and procedures.
“Considering the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to request a special prosecutor. I take seriously allegations of misconduct that harm the Nation, and this confirms my commitment to protect the Nation’s interests under the law,” Branch said.
