Officer-involved shooting reported in Wide Ruins

An officer-involved shooting involving officers from the Navajo Police Department and the Apache County Sheriff’s Office occurred on Jan. 15, in Wide Ruins, Arizona, resulting in the death of a male individual.

According to the Navajo Police Department, officers and an Apache County deputy responded to a residence about 22 miles south of Ganado, Arizona, at approximately 5:33 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible stabbing and a male individual threatening others with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers found a man armed with a weapon.

The police statement states police attempted to negotiate with him for about an hour and repeatedly gave commands for him to surrender.

Despite these efforts, the man reportedly advanced toward the officers while holding the weapon. Officers discharged their service weapons, striking the individual. The officers and emergency personnel from Pelco Valley Fire/EMS rendered first aid, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, the police statement states.

The Navajo Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation are conducting a joint investigation into the shooting.

No officers or community members were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to the area.
